A VOLCANIC ERUPTION OVER 130 MILLION YEARS AGO
Beneath the silhouette of Mount Vulture in northern Basilicata, the atmosphere is unsettled and stirring—a visual metaphor for the tension between modern industriousness and the seasonal rhythm of rural agriculture. A volcanic eruption more than 130 million years ago sketched the boundaries of the appellation, and five rivers cross the hills that rise to elevations of over 600 meters. This inland denomination lies between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas, with marked temperature swings thanks to the cool night breezes from Mount Vulture.
